Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün is a distinguished ophthalmologist specialized in retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery. Based in Private Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital in İzmir, he provides advanced treatments for retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases, and cataract surgery. With his scientific contributions, innovative surgical approaches, and internationally recognized device designs, he is regarded as a leading authority in the field of ophthalmology.
🎓 Education and Academic Career
Born in İzmir in 1968, Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün completed his secondary education at Saint Joseph College and Karşıyaka Gazi High School. He began studying at Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 and graduated in 1992. He then continued his residency in the Department of Ophthalmology at the same university. In 1997, he started working as an ophthalmology specialist and focused his studies on Retinal Diseases and Vitreoretinal Surgery. His academic achievements earned him the title of Associate Professor in 2004 and Professor in 2010. During his training, he received advanced education in retinal surgery at leading centers in Antwerp (Belgium, Dr. Zivanovic Clinic), Frankfurt (Germany, Dr. Eckardt Clinic), and Duisburg (Germany).
🧠 Expertise and Scientific Contributions
Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün served at the Department of Ophthalmology, Ege University Faculty of Medicine, until 2013, and has published numerous scientific articles in national and international journals. He is the designer of the surgical instruments known as “Erakgun Spatula Knife” and “Erakgun Snare”, which are widely used in vitrectomy operations and have become a part of the global ophthalmic literature. These innovations have significantly contributed to the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery worldwide.
