Born on March 20, 1968, in İzmir, Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün completed his middle education at Saint Joseph College and his high school education at Karşıyaka Gazi High School. After graduating from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1992, which he entered in 1986, he began his residency training in the Department of Ophthalmology at Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital in the same year. After becoming a specialist in 1997, he continued his work as a specialist doctor in the same clinic to specialize in Retina Diseases and Vitreoretinal Surgery. He received training in this field during various periods in Antwerp, Belgium (Dr. Zivanovic Clinic), Frankfurt, Germany (Dr. Eckardt Clinic), and Duisburg, Germany. Dr. Erakgün, who obtained his associate professorship in 2004 and professorship in 2010, left his position in the Department of Ophthalmology at Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital in 2013.
He is currently an active member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association Vitreoretinal Surgery Unit, Turkish Ophthalmology Association Medical Retina Unit, Turkish Ophthalmology Association Ocular Trauma Unit, European Vitreoretinal Society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has published many articles in both national and international scientific journals.
The devices named “Erakgun spatula knife” and “Erakgun snare,” designed by himself for use in vitrectomy surgeries, have been added to the literature on this subject and are used worldwide.
He is specialized in ocular complications of diabetes, retinal detachments, ocular traumas and intraocular foreign bodies, macular degeneration, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, complications of cataract surgery, and has performed over 15,000 surgical interventions in total.
Prof. Dr. Tansu Erakgün is married and a father of two children.
